[Online] Visible Mending [10.27]

Visible mending honors the long, global tradition of repair—where utility and expression meet. In this class, we’ll draw from practices like sashiko, darning, and appliqué while making space for your own style, values, and voice. With guided starting points and transferable designs, you’ll learn how to mend in a way that feels personal, not prescriptive.

In this live online workshop, Matthew will guide you through the full repair process—from assessing damage to caring for your finished mend. The focus is durability, clarity, and skill-building, not quick fixes.

This class will meet Tuesday, October 27, 2026 online from 7 to 9 PM Eastern Time. If that's too late or not the best time, the class will be recorded for asynchronous learning.

You’ll learn how to:

• Evaluate woven fabric damage and determine when a mend is appropriate
• Prepare and stabilize your garment before stitching
• Build a strong, flexible patch that moves with the garment
• Care for repaired areas so they hold up over time

This class is part of Approved Textiles’ ongoing commitment to repair as a practical skill and an act of stewardship. Mending keeps garments in use longer, reduces waste, and reconnects us to the labor embedded in everyday clothing.

Materials kit includes:

• One Approved Textiles mending transfer pack
• DARUMA sashiko needles
• Undyed and scoured 100% Japanese cotton sashiko thread (22 yards)
• Handloom woven patch fabric in assorted colors (pack of 5 fabrics)

All materials are chosen for longevity and repeated use. When checking out, please make sure to let us know what mending transfer pack you would like us to ship to you. If you forget this step, don't worry, we'll reach out to you. :)
