Explore two traditions rooted in reuse: Korean bojagi and Appalachian patchwork.
Both practices are about making something beautiful from what’s on hand. Whether it’s the delicate seams of jogakbo or the improvisational logic of Appalachian strip piecing, these methods invite us to slow down and see fabric differently—paying attention to joins, edges, and how pieces come together over time.
In this class, we’ll look at the cultural lineages behind each tradition, then begin stitching—by hand, of course.
In this live online workshop, Matthew will guide you through the core techniques of bojagi and Appalachian patchwork, including layout, seam construction, stitch rhythm, and pattern building. The emphasis is on durable handwork and deep understanding—not rushing toward surface decoration or shortcuts.
This class meets Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 7–9 PM Eastern Time. The session will be recorded and available for asynchronous learning if you’re unable to attend live.
We will send a link out for the class a day or two before we meet so we can remind you of the start time and get the link to the top of your inbox. When checking out, please make sure to include your email address.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Construct clean, intentional seams suitable for reversible or double-sided work
-
Manage thread tension so joins lie flat and secure
-
Build rhythm and structure through repetition, variation, and strip-based composition
-
Apply bojagi and patchwork techniques to future mending, repair, or creative projects
This class is part of Approved Textiles’ ongoing commitment to repair as a practical skill and an act of stewardship. Working with what already exists keeps textiles in use longer, reduces waste, and reconnects us to the labor embedded in everyday cloth.
