Appliqué is one of the oldest textile techniques in the world—simple, portable, and rich with possibility. In this class, you’ll learn how to cut, layer, and secure fabric onto a base cloth entirely by hand, building compositions that can live on garments, wall pieces, or heirlooms-to-be. Whether your style leans bold or quiet, appliqué makes space for both.
This class is rooted in handwork and story. We’ll talk about the tradition’s many lineages, then jump in with our hands—cutting, positioning, stitching, and refining your design as you go. No prior sewing experience needed, just a willingness to work slow and small.
You’ll learn:
– A grounding in the history and cultural context of appliqué
– How to plan and transfer a design
– Hand stitching techniques for strong, clean appliqué
– Tips for navigating curves, corners, and delicate edges
All tools and materials provided.
The cost of this class includes all materials and reflects our commitment to paying our instructors a living wage. 2-hour classes are 102.
**December 13th will be taught by guest facilitator: Sheryl Kessler. Sheryl attended the Philadelphia College of Arts (University of the Arts), transferred and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (Philadelphia University at Jefferson University). She began her love of textiles with machine knitting and learned hand knitting, quilt making, and embroidery. She is revisiting weaving on the rigid heddle loom.
