This is not just a stitching class—it’s an art class, through and through. In this four-week workshop, we’ll approach hana-fukin (traditional Japanese “flower cloths”) as a medium for original botanical art.
With a live plant as inspiration, students will sketch their own botanical compositions and then translate them into hand-stitched works on cloth. We'll move slowly—from concept to drawing, border construction to layered stitching—building a finished piece that balances precision, personal expression, and heritage techniques. Each session offers space for experimentation and refinement: first outlining stems and petals, then choosing whether to incorporate traditional sashiko patterning in the background as “sky” or “earth.”
This is an ideal course for anyone craving structure and freedom in their creative practice. Whether you’re looking to expand your hand-stitching vocabulary or treat this as a deep study in composition and textile design, Jess will guide you through it all with care and intention.
All materials provided—including cloth, thread, sashiko pen, and sketchbook.
