Mending our textiles centers the art of repair and reuse.
Across continents and cultures, many traditions embrace visible mending, but the geometric (hitomezashi) patterns of sashiko remain especially recognizable.
In Sashiko, we’ll explore the stitches and techniques that create its iconic patterns and motifs. You’ll work entirely by hand—without knots—while learning how to build texture, structure, and rhythm in your designs.
We’ll guide you through grid-based layouts and the spaces between stitches, then introduce principles like moyouzashi and hitomezashi so you can start creating beautiful, flowing designs of your own. By the end, you’ll have the beginnings of a piece that’s both a reference and a work of art, and the confidence to bring sashiko into your own projects.
The cost of the class is 88.00 which includes the following materials:
- 22-yard skein of 100% Japanese cotton, un-dyed and scoured
- 2-pack of DARUMA sashiko needles
- 8.5" x 11" 1/2 cm grid on water soluble fabric stabilizer sticker
- 10 cm aluminum ruler
- CHACOPA Kanda Water-Erasable Fine Point Blue Pen
If you want to mend something in class, we recommend our Intro to Visible Mending class—there, you can skip the design process and get straight to mending with the aid of an instructor.
Preferred Prerequisite Skills
This two-hour class focuses on the hand-sewing elements that make sashiko unique. To make the most of our time together, we won’t be covering the absolute basics of hand sewing.
This is not an advanced class. It just shouldn’t be the first time you’ve picked up a needle.
If threading, tying knots, or simple stitches still feel uncertain, we recommend starting with our Practical Hand Stitching Basics class first—then returning to sashiko with full confidence.
In Sashiko, we’ll guide you through a project that’s both achievable and rewarding. You’ll leave with a stitched sample, a deeper understanding of sashiko, and the reassurance that even experienced hands are always learning.
Class Exchange Policy
We’re happy to move your booking to a different date for the same class, as long as we hear from you more than 48 hours before class begins. Just email us at inquiry@approved-textiles.com, and we’ll take care of it.
If your request comes in less than 48 hours before class starts, we won’t be able to reschedule you—but we can offer you 50% off your next booking for the same class. We know life happens. This policy helps us keep our small class sizes sustainable for our shop, our teachers, and our community. Thanks for understanding.
